Search Tips

Finding the right keywords

Boolean Operators

  • Expand or narrow your search by using the operators "AND", "OR", "NOT" when conducting advanced keyword searches in the catalog and databases.

Boolean operator

Function

Example

AND

·Narrows search result

·Finds articles/websites with both terms in them. ·Terms may not necessarily be next to each other

C++ AND operators

 (retrieves articles with both terms)

OR

·Broadens search result

·Use to combine similar terms. One or the other search term must appear in the article/website

·Put parentheses around the search term

"javascript" OR "jquery"

(retrieves articles with either term)

NOT

·Narrows search result

·Use to eliminate terms from search

javascript NOT jquery

(eliminates articles that have the word jquery in them)

Phrase Searching

Databases and search engines will insert the operator AND between search terms. For example:

Information Technology = Information AND Technology

Use quotation marks to keep the phrase together like this:

"Information Technology"

Truncation

Most databases allow you to use an asterisk * to truncate a word. For example:

program* = program + programs + programmer + programming + programmable

Google automatically looks for the single and plural form of a word.

Putting these search tips together

(OOP OR "object-oriented programming") AND (Java OR Python) and "open-source"
